There are exciting changes underway with April the giraffe. If you’ve followed our labor updates, you’re aware that we are waiting for milk to fill April’s udders as this is the final change that will signify the onset of active labor. According to the latest news posted by the Animal Adventure Park (AAP), April’s udders have undergone significant change in the past day and they are filling up. Once April’s milk is present, we can expect active labor to begin within two days. For those who’ve watched the live giraffe cam wondering if the end is in sight, rest assured that these changes are significant. There is a good chance that April’s calf could be born this week.
April is a 15-year-old Reticulated giraffe who lives in Harpursville, New York at the Animal Adventure Park. More than 200 animals call the park home including her five-year-old mate Oliver “Ollie.” April became an Internet sensation once park owner Jordan Patch began live streaming her giraffe stall in January. With Facebook live videos and the YouTube giraffe cam, people can’t get enough of April and many are ecstatic to watch the birth of her calf online. You can watch the live cam that streams direct from the Animal Adventure Park in the video playlist below. You may also toggle through the playlist for other featured videos by the AAP.

The news that April is getting milk in is extremely exciting and one of the most significant changes to indicate active labor is not far off.
As April the giraffe continues to gain notoriety and popularity, the Animal Adventure Park itself is becoming a huge attraction.
The March 27, 2017, morning update also included a wonderful video produced by Toys R Us for the Animal Adventure Park featuring Allysa and April. Allysa is a zoologist who works with April. What has been amazing to watch, is April’s love, trust and affection for Allysa. Now don’t be fooled by April’s sweet demeanor. It isn’t like Oliver displays the same gentleness with Jordan, Allysa and the other AAP staff members that you see exhibited with April. There must be something unique about April because she is very tolerant and even loving with her handlers. One would think that if April were going to be cranky it would be at this point in her pregnancy, but day after day we see live footage from the giraffe cam showing how gentle and sweet April really is.
Do you think that’s contributed to April’s viral popularity? If April were kicking and stomping the handlers would anyone really want to watch? Is it because we’re not only seeing a glimpse of a pregnant giraffe ready to give birth, but a sweet giraffe that seems to not only tolerate but actually enjoy spending time with humans that so many are drawn in?

Though April’s udders are changing, the wax caps are still present. This means that we most likely won’t see active labor today, but I’m not ruling out labor this week.
Remember, the AAP describes active labor as the moment when we see calf’s hooves sticking out. When that happens, the Facebook live stream will be up and running and we will all enjoy the moment we’ve been waiting for: The birth of April’s calf live streaming online!
